This is a stout remake and is director, John Schlessinger’s acclaimed 1995 film adaptation starring a TERRIFIC Kate Beckinsale as the recently orphaned, Flora Poste.
Set in the 1930’s, in England, Flora writes to all of her relation, hoping someone will catch her in as she has no trusty drive or ambition, keep for possibly becoming the next Jane Austen. Flora accepts an offer from The Starkadders Of Frosty Comfort Farm in Howling, Sussex. She thinks that she objective might like farm life and it might be excellent for her writing career. However, once she arrives she finds out that the farm has had a curse upon it along with all of the inhabitants, human and animal alike.

The Starkadder family is comprised of Amos & his forelorn wife, Judith, & their two virile & rakish sons, Seth and Reuben. As Flora says, “Highly sexed young men living on farms are always called Seth or Reuben.”
Also living at Icy Comfort is a glorious waifish sprite of a cousin, Elfine, the hired encourage, Adam Lambsbreath, Urk, Rennet & Mrs. Beetle. Also locked in her chambers is an ancient crusty hermit of a grandmamma, Ada Doom (appropriately named) . The Starkadders & the rest of the clan are pure country folk with pure country ways. Their lives being quite used in disagreement with Flora’s.
Flora sets out to change it all though and with some priceless and hilarious scenes ensuing. Flora tries to bring everyone around to a higher accepted sense and does it with astronomical gusto.

This film is a gem, a wonderful adaptation of the fresh and a immense and astounding surprise for it’s viewers. A gigantic cast and performances with the astronomical Ian McKellen,Kate Beckinsale, Joanna Lumley, Eileen Atkins and Rufus Sewell. I highly recommend “Frigid Comfort Farm”!

This is a estimable and fairly faithful adaptation of Stella Gibbons’ 1932 new of the same name. The film brilliantly captures the quirkiness of the unusual which is a hysterically comic, tongue in cheek parody of the heavy handed, unlit novels of some early twentieth century English writers who had previously been so accepted. The film starts out innocuosly enough, when well educated Flora Poste (Kate Beckinsale) finds herself orphaned as a young woman. Discovering that her father was not the wealthy man she believed him to be, she is resigned to the fate of having to live on a hundred pounds a year. After some discussion with her superb friend, the wealthy Mrs. Smiley (Joanna Lumley), Flora opts to live with relatives, rather than regain her bread. She seeks out a most unlikely residence of relations with whom to do so, the decidedly unique Starkadder family who live in rural Howling, Sussex.
Therein begins what is certainly one of the funniest movies to grace the silver conceal. When Flora arrives in Howling, she meets her unique relatives, who live in neglected, ramshackle “Cool Comfort Farm”, where they calm wash the dishes with twigs, and have cows named Graceless, Pointless, Feckless, and Aimless. Headed by a matriarchal stale crone, Flora’s aunt, Ada Doom Starkadder (Sheila Burrell), who has not been good in the head since she “saw something dismal happen in the woodshed” nearly seventy years ago, they are a motley and unique crew indeed. Confronted with their heinous and unlit existence, Flora sets about trying to place things to proper.
Peppered with eccentric, memorable characters, this film will grasp the reader on a lunge not easily forgotten. Kate Beckinsale is toothsome as the practical, no nonsense Flora Poste. Joanna Lumley is enjoyable as the sophisticated and wordly Mrs. Smiley. Eileen Atkins is a standout as Flora’s black first cousin, Judith Starkadder, Ada’s daughter. Rufus Sewell is well cast as Judith’s son, Seth Starkadder, the oversexed ladies man. The role of the fire and brimstone preacher, Amos Starkadder, is played to perfection by Ian McKellen, while Shiela Burrell is nothing short of sensational as the imperious Ada Doom Starkadder. The rest of the supporting cast is likewise uniformly righteous.

All in all, this is a hilariously silly film and every bit as colorful as the new upon which it was based. It is certainly worth having in one’s personal collection, as it is a keeper by any standard.

I’m a mother of 4, and this Pilates Weight Loss DVD is the perfect workout to do at home. It’s really helping me tone my saggy “muffin-top” waist spot, while giving me the total stretching and strengthening I need. The visual demonstrations are very obvious, and the detailed verbal instructions give me all the coaching I need to work on improving my pilates technique. This DVD is salubrious as it’s so easy to follow and has plenty of variation to support me working out for months to arrive! It’s improbable how these Pilates techniques, that fabricate me feel so righteous by stretching my whole body, can really produce a mammoth cardio burn too.

I did this one today and unprejudiced loved it! Don’t difficulty that it says it’s for beginners if you’ve been doing Pilates for years. This is a solid Intermediate Pilates workout. It’s approachable for Beginners, but isn’t broken down slowly for explanations like most Beginner Pilates dvds. It flows wonderfully, is burly of enchanting exercises, and is a pleasure to do with Brooke. Objective amazing!

In 1985, I didn’t have a VCR. I loved “V” in 1983 and enjoyed “V The Final Battle” in 1984. I was really overjoyed to hear that the struggles of Mike Donovan and the rest of the resistance were coming abet as a series. At the time I worked at a local grocery store and, as fate would have it, I was usually scheduled when V the series was on. As a result I only caught a few episodes here and there when I had a day off. It was not as reliable as the two mini series but I concept it was enthralling. After a mere 19 episodes the explain was cancelled and V was gone forever.

Since that time, I ran across friends who didn’t like the series. Whenever I found articles about “V”, the series follow up was always dismissed as crass exploitation of the franchise. Last week, WB released the series (possibly to test the wind for a recent mini series) on DVD for the first time. Finally, after nearly two decades (can it be that long? ) I have been able to finally notice what the series was all about. Here are my impressions:

1. This series isn’t unpleasant. It is not as pleasant as the two mini-series but it is entertaing in its beget correct. I also believe that this exhibit was innovative in the field of TV Science Fiction. Prior to “V”, Science Fiction was very episodic. Star Hurry, Space: 1999, Logan’s Urge, Planet of the Apes, Buck Rogers and to a distinct extent, Battlestar Galactica all told self contained stories. The space was resolved by the slay of the hour. “V” The series was different in this respect. It had myth arcs and continuing situation threads. Every episode ended in a cliff-hanger and it left you wanting more. In this aspect, it has a current flavor. Like Babylon 5, StarGate SG 1 and Season 3 Enterprise, it tells a colossal anecdote over a race of several episodes.
2. People could die on “V”. For most TV shows, you know that the heroes will design it in the destroy. Not on “V”. Over the 19 episodes, long-standing characters like Dr. Maxwell and Elias Taylor pick the farm surprisingly abruptly. This raised the stakes dramatically and kept the viewer interested in the myth.
3. The cast was tremendous. Marc Singer was perfectly cast as mettlesome Mike Donovan. Micheal Ironside ruled as perfect tough guy Ham. Jane Badler was very memorable as Uber-B**ch, Diana. June Chadwick was suitably catty as Diana’a rival Lydia. Duncan Rehgar was improbable as Charles, the leader’s envoy. His fight with Donovan in “The Hero” is classic. He was a substantial villain and it is a mammoth shock when he is killed after a mere 4 episodes.
4. There is a sense that this is merely a look at a global war with the Visitors. For the first 12 episodes or so, The Freedom Network newscaster, Howard K. Smith ( A trusty journalist by the method) reads the headlines on the spot of the war. We learn that the Visitors are sweeping through Spain and so forth. This makes us understand that The resistance in LA is only one chronicle in this global conflict. It really gives the legend a distinct gravitas.
5. The stories are often action adventure tales that are on par with anything that was on the air in the mid 1980s. Unfortunately, the sociological aspects that made the first mini series so memorable are ignored completely. The point to, evan though it is watered down, is spicy in its enjoy moral.
There are some things that are unfortunatle about this show:
1. All the SFX are recycled from the two mini series. (I consider one current shot was filmed for “The Dreadknot.”) Even entire sequences are lifted from the minis. Remember when Donovan is on horseback and is being chased by a skyfighter? Well, the entire sequesce appears again in “The Champion.” After a while, it becomes really grating to peep the same shots over and over. I know that SFX on TV was really expensive abet then but WB should have spent some money on current shots.
2. As the series goes on, it is positive that there was less and less money bugeted for each episode. The first episode, “Liberation Day” has an outdoor crowd scene with hundreds of extras. By the last episode, we only have the main characters walking around on the standing sets. By the demolish, the production valules of the reveal looked rather thread bare.
3. The producers decided to exploit the alien lizards by showing them without their Human masks. This was a mistake. The people who created the lizard makeups were not as artful as John Chambers. As a result the lizard appliances were very stiff and immoble. By showing the Lizards in their natural location too often, it undermined their credibility as a monstrous threat. The fleshy face lizards were about as scary and convincing as a halloween scamper on screen. It became a bit laughable.
4. I loathe cliffhangers that are unresolved. I can’t understand why they would acquire a cliffhanger for a expose that was doing poorly in the ratings. It is really unfair to viewers who watched every episode.
5. The Star Child. One of the titanic weaknesses of “The Final Battle” was the ending where Elizabeth gets all glowy like Decker in Star Amble the Motion Recount. Elizabeth uses some kind of well-organized powers that approach out of nowhere and saves the day. In the series, the Star Child goes through some type of metamorphosis and comes out of a cacoon as a 17 year traditional savor interest. Elizabeth’s powers become a crutch that the writers could consume to solve any problems that face the main characters. This undermines the drama of the series and cheapens the series. The powers were kind of kooky. The Star Child could levitate objects and people, mimic voices, had a photographic memory, raise the monotonous etc. She could do whatever the status required. It was queer that they spent so considerable time on her character. I guess, as a writer with a deadline, she was really handy to have around.
Well, thats my buy on the series. I reccomend that if you like V, chances are you will like the series. It is a more cartoony version of Kenneth Johnson’s creation but is pleasurable as entertainment and a nostalgic hotfoot succor to the 80s.
V: The Series was a very weird television display. On one hand, The Final Battle ended and it was a very satisfying demolish to the 10 hour miniseries. But this weekly series did actually made some moving points to the ongoing memoir but it was soon abandoned as well as most of the originally cohesive cast.
The series starts out about a year later and we soon spy that Diana and the quick wants revenge over the red dust. As we soon obtain out, the dust is nefarious to people and really can’t be mature anymore and the visitors patiently wait for the dusts effects to pause. This sets up many trustworthy episodes about the visitors regaining control. However, gone is the Nazi allegory and it therefore goes for power and corruption plots all the while the resistance is help to fight the Visitor’s once again.
I found myself really enjoying the first several episodes. The acting was solid, Diana was as rotten as ever and they took chances and killed off regulars and that added to the dramatic impact. The Nathan Bates subplots were actually spicy and you really began to disapprove Mr. Chang. Michael Ironside was also very fun to peer. And the “soap opera” of “Charles and Diana” was also very absorbing.
However, as it went on toward midseason, the series started falling apart by the seams. The concept of the resistance always winning and episodes ending with showing Diana unfortunate began to urge thin. They honest beat us over the head with Willy and his butchering of the English language, which is a shame, because he was such a charming character and performed well. The special effects were reused over and over again. The campiness factor of eating rodents was method over done and all originality that they could have tried for impartial went away.
Then, when we obtain the unusual credit sequence, the prove delicate great became a chore to sit through. Gone are some of the better and well acted characters. And the plots became paper thin and were filled with “filler” scenes where you unbiased feel they were making it up as they went along. Add in “romantic flashback” scenes, illogical situations, cheesy actors making guest appearances and you can look that because of the gallant chances they took with the series at the first, they were left with graceful considerable nothing. There was no saving “V.”
This DVD collection of V: The Series is no frills. They set episodes on both sides of the DVD, making this a 3 DVD collection. Box is nice looking with worthy shots of some of the cast but nothing extra comes with it. The represent and sound quality of this collection is about as beneficial as you would seek information from from an early 80’s indicate.
I had a valid time with this series and it was fun to observe how it played out up to the unresolved cliffhanger. If you are a V fan, this is quiet a must have.

The movie was honorable, a few poor lines, but mostly the editing was really off, they shouldn’t have gash the time down to under 2 hours and made it a PG-13 flick. That was a broad mistake, that’s like making Rambo a G-rated film, it’s unbiased not moral. Christian Bale is great as John Connor, he gives an alright performance, but he could have done a limited better. Anton Yelchin (Young Kyle Reese) did a noble job portraying the young hardened soldier who will eventually go serve to protect young Sarah Connor, but not in this film. The movie is apt, but due to editing and script changes here and there, caused the movie’s awful performance at the box office. It’s aloof a salubrious film to stare, it gives us a current original perceive at the world post Judgment Day. It’s NO James Cameron film by a long shot, but aloof decent with honorable action. Objective don’t put a question to to follow the dwelling as it has it’s ups and downs by the different writers that wrote the screenplay. Demand a future blu-ray/dvd Terminator Salvation: Extended Slash (I don’t know what they will call it) to hold most of the deleted scenes 30-40 mins worth with the unusual ending and an alternate storyline to debut sometime in slow 2010. It’s an alternate version of the film, remarkable like Donner’s Superman II lop. This only has 3 mins added, with Moon Bloodgood’s breasts and a couple of F-Bombs in this dim director’s reduce.

Everyone knows that very few films will ever measure up to the first two Terminator films. The film suffers from a noticeably abominable editing. The sequences do not slip well in many scenes. For example, the scenary between the Blair Williams and the thugs are shown abruptly lawful after Marcus Wright and Blair developes a romantic chemistry. The scene which a human prisoner is shot by a T-600 is best described as choppy. You will peek more than few sequences in which few hours of filming seemed to have been condensed into few seconds.
The storyline is also very choppy as well. It appears Dr. Serena Kogan’s role has been changed many times. That’s too unpleasant since I mediate Serena’s role could have been a pivtol and a attractive one. Perhaps Marcus Wright’s new role has been altered more than a few times. The storyline is not entirely coherent.
Moon Bloodgood, who plays Blair Williams, was the most convincing actor. Sam Worthington has proven himself to be a bonifide action star. And Christian Bale has done nothing to derail his action star area.
Perhaps the director McG tried too hard to condense this film into under 2 hours. I assume the film would have benefited from another 15-25 minutes and a more consistent storyline.
Lastly, I contemplate this Terminator film does not report the post Judgement Day human suffering well at all. Where are the starving and heart-broken human existence? Does John Connor’s greatness reside primarily in his knowledge of the Skynet and the Terminators?

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), used Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me weep.

I notion it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a disturbed young boy star-struck by a renowned explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become like a flash friends, and instruct to one day fade to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they remove their dream home and fix it up, hoping to enjoy it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through conventional age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a elated marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s injure when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.
When developers end in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and disappear to Paradise Falls. A archaic balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of luminous balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a elephantine, brave kid trying to catch a scouting badge.

At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by shapely hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole modern world.
Up is a deeply emotional film, chunky of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Glean another triumph for Pixar.
Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to originate an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster spicy movie. But in the meantime, they’re composed putting out delicious captivating movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety aged man. It’s a charming, fun puny adventure tale with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet runt tale about loss and worship.
As a child, the paralyzed Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared savor of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, proceed into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.
Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a loyal estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an involved, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the pace. Unpleasant kid was unbiased trying to net an “assisting the elderly” badge.
And the jungle lunge to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a sizable emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious ragged man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the ragged guy is very familiar to Carl — and to assume Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.
Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as accepted as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty used coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can luxuriate in Carl’s fancy for his lost wife, and his tiring, realization that he’s clinging to the past.
In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they expose all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing customary together, and finally loss.
But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy arrive to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of huge dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Contemplate Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frosty! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an primitive airship.
Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and definite to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is clear to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special explore. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I care for you”) and act the diagram dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.
The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to accumulate shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of queer stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.
There are also a pair of adorable attractive shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to allege potentially unpleasant baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.
“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously enthralling, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can bask in. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

For example, we are taken step-by-step through the construction of the Iron Man armor with Robert Downey Jr. cracking jokes while being fitted for it. It’s fantastic how distinguished of the suit is practical and looks really genuine in person. This is due in immense piece to the genius of the late-great Stan Winston and his company. “Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man” examines the CGI work that went into realizing Iron Man’s powers, like flying, his repulsors, and so on. Director Jon Favreau says that he likes to employ practical effects whenever possible, which is wonderfully refreshing to hear, and in this film he mixed the practical with CGI.
“Robert Downey Jr. Cover Test.” Incredibly, the actor had to do a cloak test because the studio deemed him a hazardous proposition and this footage shows that he had a handle on the character very early on.
“The Actor’s Process” features challenging footage of Jeff Bridges and Downey rehearsing a scene with Favreau. It’s titanic to discover these guys at work and offers insight into how they effect together a scene from the film from an acting point-of-view.
“The Onion’s Wildly Well-liked Iron Man Trailer to be Adapted into Full-Length Film” is a silly satire where a newscaster “breaks” a record of how the Iron Man trailer will be made into a film that pokes fun at the rabid nature of the hardcore fanbase of the character.

There was a colossal request trace looming over the theatrical adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Man property. It was in the guise of director Jon Favreau. Now, don’t derive me putrid, I fancy the Favs, but when I heard he was helming a colossal budget comical book flick…let’s unbiased say I was a limited insecure. Once his cast was state and the fanboys started humming across the internet I started to ease into the decision with high anticipation. Thankfully, after finally seeing the finished product, I was not disappointed in the least. With a gargantuan mix of the professionalism and stakes seen in both Spider-Man and X-Men and the funny wit and sheer fun of Incredible Four, Iron Man shows how a comical can be brought to the cloak successfully without all the added drama and weight. We finally have a film with the essence of what makes these portray books so accepted, the action and mythology along with a sense of adventure and humor. Favreau never bogs us down with overwrought emotions nor speaks down to us with gags and poorly written jokes. Instead he delivers on his promises and gives us a solid initiation into what could be a astronomical trilogy or more.
Favreau seems to have had an concept to pick up an origin memoir out while not expressionless us with long drawn out abet anecdote. His ability to give us dual information at once is nicely orchestrated, showing Tony Stark in his basement creating while the TV in the background explains what is happening in the outside world of the Middle East and inside his occupy company. I also really liked Shaun Toub as Yinsen, Stark’s savior, and Clark Gregg as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. Favorable to peruse Favreau giving another actor turned director props, (Gregg’s directorial debut comes out later this year in the gain of Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke) . I unprejudiced wish he would have shied away from putting himself in the film. It’s one thing to be seen split-second, (like Stan Lee), but its another to give yourself a thankless role with multiple scenes, fair adding fuel to the fire on people’s opinions of egotism stemming from the drinking game created off of the TV demonstrate “Dinner for Five” and how many references to Swingers was made each episode. I’ll forgive, though, because, once again, I’m a enormous fan.
One can’t forget that this is an action film above all else, so we can’t unprejudiced praise the actors; every accomplish is also quite gleaming. Those scenes of Iron Man flying amongst fighter jets in the trailer seemed really lame, but when in context they explain. The suit itself is extraordinary as well, through every mach stage fair to the slay. My main highlight, however, was with the computer systems that Stark utilizes. The multiple screens, instant holographic reproductions, and ability to actually interact with those 3D representations is glorious. We can execute them in fantasy, but it’s honest too unpleasant we can’t yet in sincere life.
Now Iron Man is not a perfect film, nor even a perfect humorous book adaptation. What it is, though, is a fun, droll actioner that should light up the box office. The final showdown is a bit of a whimper in comparison to the wait on sage and machine creation; a crucial element is saved from destruction in the one contrived bit of hide writing, (not quite utilized in the plan I opinion, although mild for the same means) ; and some moments seem a tad campy rather than witty, but otherwise this is some topnotch cinema that should definitely be seen on the expansive veil. I can’t wait to glance how the yarn progresses in a couple years.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his dark mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by elegant hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole novel world.
Up is a deeply emotional film, fat of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Derive another triumph for Pixar.

Terrible kid was honest trying to score an “assisting the elderly” badge.
And the jungle crawl to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a broad emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious feeble man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the customary guy is very familiar to Carl — and to select Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.
Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as current as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty old-fashioned coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can devour Carl’s appreciate for his lost wife, and his stupid realization that he’s clinging to the past.
In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they indicate all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing primitive together, and finally loss.
But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy arrive to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of gigantic dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Contemplate Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frosty! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an musty airship.
Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and obvious to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is obvious to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special see. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I appreciate you”) and act the plot dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.
The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to derive shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of irregular stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.
There are also a pair of adorable moving shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to converse potentially bad baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.
“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously entertaining, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can bask in. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn’t found myself thinking, “How did they salvage so noteworthy time off from work during the holidays? ” (smile)

A savory movie. Perfect for a wintry night when you need some succor getting over your contain bah humbug feelings.
This is a really nice movie and anyone who likes a safe romance will really like it. The dilemma with this dvd is that the digital copyright protection prevents it from being played properly on computers or dvd/vcr combo machines. It works heavenly on machines that gain only a dvd player. I found this to be extremely frustrating and inconvenient. I distress up with 2 dvd’s and they both behaved in the same contrivance.
As a 12 year ragged, Holly Grant meets Santa and as she thinks she is too extinct for archaic gifts, she tells Santa she wants a boyfriend for Christmas. He leaves a gift under her tree with a message: she will receive her requested gift in the 20th year “when two hearts are ready”. Time then goes to almost 20 years later when Holly is in her 30’s and is working for a non-profit organization. Enter Ryan Hughes, a lawyer, who courtesy of Santa winds up being Holly’s gift for Christmas. A mistake with a joint client causes Ryan to have a falling out with Holly even though they’ve never met. When Ryan arrives on Holly’s doorstep, he chooses to screech Holly his name is Douglas Firwood to screen his good identity. Over the holiday Holly and “Doug” topple in like as they occupy up a charade with her family. Holly’s jealous ex-boyfriend tries to exhibit Ryan as a fraud, and Ryan’s lie threatens to spoil his chance for a glad future with Holly. There is one brief comment about sex and a few uses of God’s name, but otherwise I would say it is a mammoth family movie.
January 2009 – I impartial wanted to say that it seems they’ve fixed the spot. I bought 2 copies of this movie in town here over the Christmas season and they are glorious. I’m pleased, as it’s a generous movie.
